Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company built 98 Type 3 locomotives for British Railways Southern Region between 1960 and 1962. D6535 was delivered on 10th December 1960. It was renumbered 33116 on 31st December 1973 and named 'Hertfordshire Rail Tours' on 11th December1993 at Weymouth station by John Farrow and Ian Kapur of Hertfordshire Rail Tours. It carried this name until April 1998. Withdrawn from traffic in August 1998, it was stored out of use at Old Oak Common until June 2003 when it was acquired for the National Collection.

D6535 was one of 19 Class 33s fitted with push/pull equipment in connection with the electrification and modernisation of the Waterloo-Bournemouth-Weymouth route in 1966/ 67.These were designated Class 33/1 and were usually to be found operating with non-powered'4-TC' units on non-electrified Southern Region lines, primarily between Bournemouth and Weymouth, until electrification was extended to the Dorset port in 1988.

The National Railway Museum loaned D6535 to the Great Central Railway in April 2005 where it has been located ever since and where it is available for traffic.
